Valentine’s Day Cats

I’m not even sure if I believe in Valentine’s Day– my husband has been given a pass on the mandatory V-day gift (though he usually gets one anyways) due to my lack of sentiment towards the holiday. But lately I have had hearts on the brain— so much so that every time I close my eyes all I see are Valentine’s Day Cats! In an attempt to purge my mind of these cupid-related thoughts I decided to make a few Valentines Day Cat looks for the Notso Kitty Shop. I’ve also been drawing again— more on that below— one of my favorite subjects so far has been a heart-shaped kitty face.

Last week’s plan of coming up with weekly goals was not abandoned this week— my goal this week was to come up with 4 new looks for the Notso Kitty Shop. I didn’t quite make this goal— I came up with 3 completed looks and I started on two others….. I think that progress is close enough to count πŸ™‚

Valentine’s Day Cat Hat

One of my favorite types of hats to make for the Notso Kitty Shop has involved hand-shaping a piece of felt and placing it over a hat-form (or plastic container in my case) as it dries. I used white felt with heart-shaped embellishments for this particular hat. I think Notso looks quite dapper.

Notso insisted on posing in various ways with this hat. Sometimes the talent can be pushy— but it’s okay when they are equally cute.

Heart Shaped Cat Glasses

I was lucky enough to find Fluffy to model some heart shaped glasses I made for the Notso Kitty Shop’s Valentines Day collection. He modeled the pink pair before he managed to escape again….. I had to use Notso for the red pair since Fluff was MIA.

iPad Drawing Apps

I have recently been inspired to begin drawing again— last week’s blog posting contained several pages out of my old-fashioned paper sketch book. This week I began using the Paper app for my husband’s iPad mini. It’s amazing what I’ve been able to draw with the tip of my finger over the last few days. It’s so much fun to explore the tools and experiment with different drawing techniques on the iPad. This app allows you to save and export your work— here’s the cute little heart-shaped kitty face I was speaking about before:

That’s all from this week. I look forward to posting more progress soon!

Happy New Year: Some Resolutions

Hello everyone! It’s been a few weeks since I have posted some cat hat updates so I figure I’m due. I’ve been spending the last few weeks recharging away from my cat hat studio— let’s see what I’ve been up to and where I think I’m going soon.

State of the Studio

When I last left off, I had been fulfilling a few “planetary fascinator” cat hat orders thanks to Etsy’s free word-of-mouth advertising. I’ve finally caught up with all of that— today I finished up two more fascinators to restock my supply. I also finished up another Christmas Tree Cat Hat and a partial holiday ornament fascinator for next year’s holiday season— I figure if I prepare those a year ahead of time the Christmas rush will not catch me quite so flat-footed next year.

Aside from catching up on Christmas looks, I also started some Valentine’s cat hats for the rapidly approaching holiday. Here is a sneak peak at one of the (unfinished) looks— watch for it in my shop soon!

What Else has been going on: Skiing

With Winter comes other outside interests that distract me from my cat hat empire— this year has been no different. Todd and I went to New Hampshire for the last week of 2012 to catch up on my skiing. Oh what fun! Here is what I looked like during a typical day on the slopes

ski one

I managed to ski at Attitash, Cranmore and Bretton Woods in seven days of snowy New Hampshire mountain bliss. Of course skiing for me wouldn’t be fun without a few challenges thrown in— this year I discovered that I should work on my “stream jumping” courtesy of a backwoods trail at Cranmore. Here is what that learning process looked like

Well, at least I didn’t need an emergency room visit (yet, I’m knocking on wood as I write that). Let’s hope this winter brings lots more snow so I can continue to work on my skills πŸ™‚

The 2013 TO DO List

I have many goals for 2013— both related and non-related to building my cat hat empire. I’m going to attempt to write them all down now so that I feel some obligation to follow through— perhaps I will get a few of these items done this year! And for those of you that have read my blog in the past, yes, some of these tasks have been on my to-do list for awhile and haven’t been moving to the done list….. ALL IN GOOD TIME! In no specific order, here is the list!

  • Design several more cat hat looks for the Notso Kitty Shop
  • learn Japanese (Todd bought me Rosetta stone for Xmas πŸ™‚ )
  • launch my “Haterade” cat toys (you will see soon enough what that means)
  • Design an Etsy shop logo (already!!!)
  • Design some new marketing materials once logo is figured out
  • Work on my website redesign (this I have been procrastinating for quite some time)
  • finish Lynda.com classes for other Adobe products (I got through Photoshop and Illustrator)
  • submit my photographs to stock photography archives

Well, that’s all I have on the list for now. I have accepted that it will probably take me a few years to get all that is listed above in place— but I’m going to give my best effort this year in trying to get it done before 2014 rolls around. Let’s see how much of this I can finish up!
