New: The Carmen Miranda Inspired Cat Hat

Ever since I first had the idea to start making cat hats (almost two years ago now!) I wanted to pay tribute to the stage hats worn by Carmen Miranda. I always loved the way an impossible amount of fruit stayed balanced upon her noggin throughout her acts as seen in the following photo:

What has taken me so long to create the kitty cat version of Carmen Miranda’s famous fruit hat you ask? Well, it was mostly logistical difficulties that kept me from completing the task. First I was under the belief that I would have to buy fruit pieces that were pre-manufactured. This caused some difficulties since I couldn’t find any ready-made fruit that was the correct size for a cat hat. A few weeks ago it hit me though: I would make my own fruit! I started out by carving shapes out of styrofoam and soon I had enough pieces to fill a small basket…. Only one problem: no small basket!

For the second part of my logistical challenge, I decided to weave my own basket since I couldn’t find one that was properly sized for a cat hat. Basket weaving using craft foam actually came pretty easily to me—- after a few days of drying time for the glue, I had myself the perfect cat hat base to fill with fruit.

And here is how the final product turned out:

Behold: The Great Cheeseburger Cat Hat

If the internet can agree on one thing it’s this: Cats love their cheeseburgers. Ever since the dawn of the first internet cheeseburger cat meme on Icanhascheezburger.com, cats everywhere have been asking for cheeseburgers in record numbers!

It’s about time that Notso Kitty paid homage to the “cats who love cheeseburgers” craze with a ย brand new Cheeseburger Cat Hat! What took me so long to think of this? Perhaps since I have been ย a vegetarian for the past 15 years, cheeseburgers are not at the front of my brain….. But clearly they should have been!

I began construction on the Cheeseburger Cat Hat this Saturday by identifying how I would make the individual parts. I decided to make the bun, lettuce and cheese out of felt. The burger patty, tomato, and onion slices would all be made out of hand-painted glittered-styrofoam. ย I got to work cutting out the pieces and painting the parts— by the end of the day I had the individual components completed (save for drying time).

I decided to put my cheeseburger on a blue glittery plate— a true blue plate special. I constructed the base to be able to sit upon a cat’s head with felt lining and a bit of elastic.

Construction was complete when I topped it off with the “sesame seed” (rhinestone) bun.

The next step was getting this puppy on a cat. Fluff was available for modeling duties this morning (lucky him!) so he got to do the honors. He didn’t mind this hat too much— he actually liked how easy it was to swat off his own head ๐Ÿ™‚ After a few minutes of his patience I had captured these fantastic shots of him in the Cheeseburger Cat Hat.

Valentine’s Day Cats

I’m not even sure if I believe in Valentine’s Day– my husband has been given a pass on the mandatory V-day gift (though he usually gets one anyways) due to my lack of sentiment towards the holiday. But lately I have had hearts on the brain— so much so that every time I close my eyes all I see are Valentine’s Day Cats! In an attempt to purge my mind of these cupid-related thoughts I decided to make a few Valentines Day Cat looks for the Notso Kitty Shop. I’ve also been drawing again— more on that below— one of my favorite subjects so far has been a heart-shaped kitty face.

Last week’s plan of coming up with weekly goals was not abandoned this week— my goal this week was to come up with 4 new looks for the Notso Kitty Shop. I didn’t quite make this goal— I came up with 3 completed looks and I started on two others….. I think that progress is close enough to count ๐Ÿ™‚

Valentine’s Day Cat Hat

One of my favorite types of hats to make for the Notso Kitty Shop has involved hand-shaping a piece of felt and placing it over a hat-form (or plastic container in my case) as it dries. I used white felt with heart-shaped embellishments for this particular hat. I think Notso looks quite dapper.

Notso insisted on posing in various ways with this hat. Sometimes the talent can be pushy— but it’s okay when they are equally cute.

Heart Shaped Cat Glasses

I was lucky enough to find Fluffy to model some heart shaped glasses I made for the Notso Kitty Shop’s Valentines Day collection. He modeled the pink pair before he managed to escape again….. I had to use Notso for the red pair since Fluff was MIA.

iPad Drawing Apps

I have recently been inspired to begin drawing again— last week’s blog posting contained several pages out of my old-fashioned paper sketch book. This week I began using the Paper app for my husband’s iPad mini. It’s amazing what I’ve been able to draw with the tip of my finger over the last few days. It’s so much fun to explore the tools and experiment with different drawing techniques on the iPad. This app allows you to save and export your work— here’s the cute little heart-shaped kitty face I was speaking about before:

That’s all from this week. I look forward to posting more progress soon!

The Christmas Cat Fascinator

I recently had a request for a custom Christmas Cat Hat via my Etsy storefront The Notso Kitty Shop. The purchaser, a lovely person named Emily, asked that I make a “holiday ornament fascinator” in the same vein as my “planetary fascinator” already on display in my store.

Here is a picture of the original “planetary fascinator”:

After about a week’s time, I had completed the new “holiday ornament cat fascinator”. I used traditional red, green and silver decorations per Emily’s request… I think it came out splendidly! Notso Fluffy modeled this one as well. Presenting The Christmas Cat Fascinator:

I think now I need to make a few more of these for the Notso Kitty Shop in the future! I just loved the original so much— but it sold out much too quickly ๐Ÿ™‚ I like the idea of stocking a few in a few different color varieties. Notso has never been so well decorated! I’ll post again here soon when I create a few more. Also in the works are some Hanukkah looks— though I’m not quite too sure what those might end up looking like. Knowing me, they will be wacky– that is for certain ๐Ÿ™‚

Until next time, I leave you with a few more pictures of Notso Fluffy sporting his fabulous Christmas Cat Fascinator. Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜‰

Getting Back into the World of Cat Hats

It has been a busy weekend for me so far in terms of the world of cat hats and creativity. ย I finally worked on (and finished) my new Elton John kitty look that was constructed upon special request for one of my Etsy fans. I also managed to create some new packaging, take a few stellar Notso photos, and begin work on another planetary fascinator! I think it’s safe to say I might have finally gotten my “cat hat groove” back! I had been in a cat hat rut for the past 4 months or so— it’s about time I snapped out of it!

Here we have the results of my Elton John design; based upon his look at the 2010 Grammy’s:

Now I may be biased, but I think this costume came out really good! I also liked the photos that Notso was patient enough to pose for. So much so that I was inspired to make some new kitty-look packaging! I used a recycled Birchbox and a photo of Notso to create this new look— I think it looks quite cute!

Lest you worry this “cat hat groove” is only a temporary thing– here is a picture of some more cat hats that I have started in the studio. The blue tool visible in the first photograph is my new styrofoam cutter– it makes cutting styrofoam so much easier (and more professional looking). Methods for construction of cat hats improvements abound!

I have given you a sneak preview of some cat hats that will soon be populating the Notso Kitty Shop! If you enjoyed, you can check out more kitty fun over in my store. Watch for more new items coming soon!
